Hoax Alert: VIRUS on FB using your pictures

VIRUS on FB using your pictures. It says you have been tagged in a picture, wants you to click on a link to see it, then hacks into your computer & all your accounts, including banking & other secure accounts. It destroys your computer. Once hacked into your computer, it sends …e-mails to your friends telling them they have been tagged in pictures & starts the process again PLEASE RE-POST

This alarmist message which warns of a dangerous virus that uses fake notifications of being tagged in a photo is both partly true and false, though mostly false.

It is true that past koobface virus threats have used the method of claiming a Facebook user was tagged in a photo in an attempt to fool that user into clicking a link that would then request them to install malicious software. The Fake Sims 3 Application scam and Photo Comment Application scam both claimed a facebook user had been tagged in a photo to dupe them into installing dangerous Facebook applications. However both those threats were quickly shut down by Facebook and we are unaware of any serious threat re-using this particular tactic again. Additionally the assertion that the virus `hacks your computer and all of your accounts` is pseudo jargon designed to scare the reader. None of the genuine threats using this tactic destroys the victims computer either and this overly alarmist message is too vague, misleading and outdated to be of any use.

Facebook users should be aware when clicking links, and never install Facebook applications or other downloadable attachments after clicking on Facebook links. If you click a link that states you have been tagged in a photo, then you should be directed to that photo. If anything else happens, leave the page and close your browser.
