Safer Internet Day is here!

Friends Put a big red cross in your calendar, take the day off work and book a babysitter; this February 8th is Safer Internet Day! Okay well maybe you won’t be doing that, but it’s as good a day as any to consider your online behaviour.
Safer Internet Day is a European initiative aimed at making people more aware of just how much information they share through the internet. This year the focus is on social networks.
Over the last few years the impact of social networks on our daily lives has skyrocketed. Facebook now claims to have more than 500 million users, it’s founder Mark Zuckerberg was Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year 2010, and a film on Facebook’s creation – The Social Network– has won critical acclaim. And it doesn’t stop there; there are other networks out there, Twitter, MySpace, Bebo, Netlog and Orkut to name but a few.
Hundreds of millions of people all sharing photos, memories, information and plans – the data adds up. Safer Internet Day isn’t about saying “No” to sharing, it’s about making sure you’re only sharing what you want with who you want. So here are a few tips to help you do just that:
Think about whom you add to your network – People in your network will know all the ins and outs of your life, make sure you want them to!
Check privacy settings – In your account settings make sure that your privacy settings aren’t sharing information that you want to keep private.
Be smart about your password – Keep troublemakers out of your account by having a strong password. Mix upper and lower case letters with numbers and symbols to make it hard to crack.
Beware of public computers – If using a computer in an internet cafe or other public place, make sure that your login details aren’t being stored by the browser. This could grant access to anyone sitting down in the future!
Protect your mobile device – Facebook and other social networks are now accessible via mobile phones. Make sure that if your mobile gets lost or stolen that the finder doesn’t have access to all your personal log in details.
